The EiQ assessment was in itself a big challenge to me. I have been a rational person all my life. In my opinion, Emotional Intelligence and Emotional Quotient is influenced by people surrounding you. With this assumption, I would like to review this EiQ assessment. According to the EI assessment some of my greatest emotional strengths are self-awareness, high value integrity, empathy, good impulse control, healthy coping skills and healthy level of self-esteem. I would say the result in exactly what I expected it to be. I have always put value integrity as my top priority and â€Å"logic† has always overpowered my emptions when it comes to dealing with situations involving value integrity. Even during my time as an engineer, the company values and processes were guiding light to me and I have always resented circumventing those value even when asked by senior management. However, areas such as self-awareness and empathy needs some improvements and I believe leadership experiences in my career going forward would allow me to develop these skills further. There is a big list for areas of EI improvements. To begin with, my emotional self-awareness is very limited and I am not comfortable with emotions in general. This didn’t surprise me at all. These creatures change their profile pictures almost every other day; their famous picture pose is the repulsive â€Å"Duck face†Ã¢â‚¬â€they stick their lips out and take a picture next to a mirror, preferably the bathroom mirror. An â€Å"annoying-Facebook-girl’s† favorite quote is YOLO—You Only Live Once, which gives them an excuse to do irrational and foolish stuff thinking they won’t be judged. The second category of Facebook users are the â€Å"Simon-Cowell’s,† also known as the â€Å"Critics. † They are the trolls of the Internet. The â€Å"Simon-Cowell’s† are harsh and judgmental criticizers; they always have something negative to say and can never shut the hell up. They claim that Facebook is an open society and that they need to express their opinion no matter what. The â€Å"Simon-Cowell’s† are the â€Å"annoying-Facebook-girl’s† worst enemy. The â€Å"Simon-Cowell’s† tend to criticize the â€Å"annoying-Facebook-girl’s† status updates, photos, and lifestyle. The individuals in this category believe in freedom of speech more than anything else; their most famous comeback is â€Å"If you don’t like my opinion then just unfriend me†. You know that you have a â€Å"Simon-Cowell† on your friends list when he or she comments in the first few seconds after you update a status or upload a picture with a sarcastic comment or harsh statement. Their main objective on Facebook is to demean people, humiliate them, and attack them. In reality, a â€Å"Simon-Cowell† is a coward behind a keyboard. His lifelessness contributes to his hatred towards people; they have no friends and most probably live in their parent’s basement. A â€Å"Simon-Cowell† is an insecure individual that feels good about him or herself when they criticize others—they have nothing positive to say. The best technique to avoid these trolls is to stop arguing with them and delete their cruel comments because they feed off the anger of others. The third category, which is growing rapidly nowadays, is the â€Å"attention-seeking-whore. † These are the people who would do anything to get attention. Most of them are sick of their actual lives; therefore, they join Facebook to gain fake popularity on the Internet and seek the attention that is not provided for them in reality, mainly because they are â€Å"fugly:† fucking ugly. The most common act of an â€Å"attention-seeking-whore† is uploading a picture of herself either showing parts of her boobs or posing for a booty-pop-picture—bending their knees and popping their butts next to a mirror. Her main objective on Facebook is to gain as many likes and get as much positive feedback as possible; therefore, they caption their photos as â€Å"Like if you think I’m hot† or â€Å"comment if you wanna bang me†. An â€Å"attention-seeking-whore† would never post anything on people’s wall, or reply to anyone’s comments nor inboxes†¦ playing hard to get that is. They spent most if their time on Facebook checking how many likes they got and reading the comments left by perverts, with a frown on their miserable-fake-multicolored faces. The last category is commonly known among guys, which is the â€Å"I’m-too-cool-for-Facebook. Nobody knows the reason why these people even have an account in the first place. In this category, the individuals tend to rarely update their statuses or post pictures; nevertheless, they spend a lot of time checking their Facebook’s newsfeed (secretly). They have all the gossip, they know what ev eryone is doing, but no one knows anything about them. They are like invisible ghosts spying on an active community. The most shared characteristic of the â€Å"I’m-too-cool-for-Facebook† is their profile pictures: a photo of a car, most probably the car of their dreams. The most common status update for the â€Å"I’m-too-cool-for-Facebook† is â€Å"Facebook sucks! Am gonna deactivate soon lol;† or they sometimes act all hipster-ish, saying, â€Å"Facebook is too mainstream; I switched to Twitter or Instagram. † But, in fact, their secret affection for Facebook far exceeds the amount of pictures â€Å"annoying-Facebook-girl† uploads in a day. Andrew carnegie 2 Essay Andrew Carnegie was born in Dunfermline, Scotland in 1835. His father, Will, was a weaver and a follower of Chartism, a popular movement of the British working class that called for the masses to vote and to run for Parliament in order to help improve conditions for workers. The exposure to such political beliefs and his familys poverty made a lasting impression on young Andrew and played a significant role in his life after his family immigrated to the United States in 1848. Andrew Carnegie amassed wealth in the steel industry after immigrating from Scotland as a boy. He came from a poor family and had little formal education. The roots of Carnegies internal conflicts were planted in Dunfermline, Scotland, where he was born in 1835, the son of a weaver and political radical who instilled in young Andrew the values of political and economic equality. His familys poverty, however, taught Carnegie a different lesson. When the Carnegies emigrated to America in 1848, Carnegie determined to bring prosperity to his family. He worked many small jobs which included working for the Pennsylvania Railroad where he first recognized the importance of steel. With this recognition, he resigned and started the Keystone Bridge Company in 1865. He built a steel-rail mill, and bought out a small steel company. By 1888, he had a large plant. Later on he sold his Carnegie Steel Company to J. P. Morgans U.S. Steel Company after a serious, bloody union strike. He saw himself as a hero of working people, yet he crushed their unions. The richest man in the world, he railed against privilege. A generous philanthropist, he slashed the wages of the workers who made him rich. By this time, Carnegie was an established, successful millionaire. He was a great philanthropist, donating over $350 million dollars to public causes, opening libraries, money for teachers, and funds to support peace. In the end, he gave away about 90% of his own money to various causes. He also preached to others to do the same as in giving money for education and sciences. The problem, however, was that there was such a contrast between the rich and the poor. By this he was referring to the inequalities in rights, hereditary powers, and such things. He also felt we should have a continuum of forward progress, i.e. civilizing, industrializing. Apparently in his time there was a movement to drift back into a time when there was little advance in modernizing and technologically advancing; when neither master nor servant was as well situated. This proves that the direction the U.S. took until now was, in fact, the right path since the goal was already in progress. He has to argue and prove that through forward motion all of these problems of social difference, that the poor would also advance with the times, thus diminishing the difference slowly but surely. As the rich get richer they bring up the standard and, in effect, the poor with them as the economy grows. The government comes up with a way to run money that is suited to be in the best interest of the most possible people. In the end, you realize that the majority of the wealth made in this new system is going only to a few people. Then it says about the only question that could possibly arise in this type of a situation. Since the wealth inevitably goes to a concentrated amount of people in the best possible set of circumstances, the question is what to do with the money in order to best serve the general public. So what can a man do with the excess wealth he has amassed? His money is not just for competence, but rather surplus money. There are three solutions that Carnegie gives for this. The first includes leaving ones money to his family or his oldest son, a common practice in western Europe. This is a misguided affection, and a bad idea according to Carnegie, because one cannot duplicate the styles and strategies of another no matter how hard he tries. The Great Hero Luke Skywalker Essay Joseph Campbell’s perception of a hero’s journey begins with a primary series of steps called the Adventure of the Hero. Many narrative heroes use all or many of these steps. One particular character is Luke Skywalker from Star Wars. In his journey to become a Jedi he goes through these initial stages. Luke Skywalker lives with his Aunt and Uncle on a farm. Luke wants to be a pilot but his uncle has been holding him back from joining the academy so that Luke can help out on the farm. In order to get enough hands to compensate for Luke’s departure they must purchase droids to work on the farm. This is where he meets R2-D2, a droid that the family purchases from some space creatures called the Jowas. R2-D2 contains a message from a women name Princess Leia. In the message, she is addressing a man named Obi-wan Kenobi. Luke figures that she means Ben Kenobi who is an old man that lives on Luke’s planet. Luke decides that he will go later to look for Ben and figure out what the message is about. This is where the next step takes place called, Refusal of Call. Luke turns down Ben’s proposal because he is unfamiliar with the outside world and he is needed by his uncle on the farm. The next step in Campbell’s journey of a hero is called Supernatural Aid. The supernatural aid is clearly Ben Kenobi. Ben was once part of a group called the Jedi Masters who are known to be able to use the mystical power called the Force. They can use this power to see things without their eyes, move objects and even control people’s minds. Ben demonstrates this when they are stopped by Imperial Soldiers. In order to get past them he targets the leader of them and controls his mind. Another aspect of this step is a giving of a gift or relic from the supernatural character to the hero. In this case, it is the light saber. The Jedi Masters are known for using light sabers which are a beam like sword that can cut through almost anything. This light saber will aid Luke on the rest of his journey. The next step that is supposed to happen is called Crossing the Threshold. Unfortunately, when Luke returns home he discovers that his family has been murdered. He decides to go back to Ben and join him on his quest. He has no obligations now and he is quite curious about the outside world and who Princess Leia is. Common Application to Enforce 650-word Limit and Eliminate Topic of Choice In April 2011 I reported on a new 500-word limit for college personal statement, enacted by the Common Application. In that article I wrote, â€Å"Students are now requested to write 250-500 words on their chosen topic.† I now realize how loaded two words in that sentence were: requested and chosen. Come August 13, 2013, two important changes will take effect in the Common Application: (1) The 250-500-word (**UPDATE: Word limit was updated to 650 words for 2013-14 as of September 2013) bookends will be enforced, not requested; and (2) although students will still be able to choose a topic, the topics will be much more constrained- the â€Å"Topic of your choice† option is going to be eliminated from the array of essay questions. The Up Side I am personally pleased with these changes to the rules. After all, what’s the point of a suggested word limit without any modicum of enforcement? It has bugged me, quite honestly, that even though there is a 650-word requested essay length, students have been writing essays of 750 words or more and getting admitted. Writing a 650-word essay is a challenge and requires students to rise to the occasion. Shorter essays, by their nature, must use more creativity and hold more focus- challenges that can prove the writing prowess of any college applicant. I have also been bothered by the logic of having several essay topics to choose from, and then a separate question allowing the applicant to write on a topic of his or her choice. Why is there not just one question that asks students to write about a topic of their choice, with some suggestions of topics they might choose? Eliminating the catch-all forces students to be creative and to prove that they are able to answer a specific question posed to them. No one gets off the hook here. Protests Abound According to the comments on the NYT blog, I am in the minority. Concerned commenters express their opinion that eliminating the open essay question tamps down on creativity and limits the student’s â€Å"voice†; one post suggests that admissions committees will not be able to get to know applicants in a meaningful way without this essay topic. Almost everyone expressed upset at the changes. On the other end of the spectrum, one person commented, â€Å"If a student can’t creatively respond to a prescribed prompt, THAT is the problem- not the prompt.† I agree. Furthermore, I find that many of my students, given the opportunity to write on a topic of their choice, end up writing an essay that would have been appropriate for one of the other prompts- for instance, a person that influenced you or a topic of importance. One parent observed the same phenomenon with her son. Here’s the comment I submitted: †¦ I love this change. From my perspective, the best display of a students writing ability is how the student responds to a restricted question. Does she take on the topic in a way no one else did? Can he be creative and focused in a word-limited essay? Does the essay answer the question? It might be worth noting that in many classes, essay and paper topics are prescribed. I dont remember topic of your choice essays in English 101. Its likely that this Common App change is meant to test applicants ability to perform in their college classes. And schools can still request a supplemental essay if they want to see an additional layer of creativity. Encouraging Challenge and Creativity And after submitting my topic, I saw this additional comment by someone who agrees with me: â€Å"By removing â€Å"topic of choice,† the Common App challenges applicants by forcing them to think creatively under constraints. Anyone can ramble on about whatever they want, but a truly successful and creative writer can surprise the reader under tight restrictions. It’s the same as writing under certain poem structures–even though you have to follow the rules, you can still express yourself. This is the same reason I think enforcing the word count is a good idea, because it forces applicants to writes as effectively as possible.† What do you think about these changes?
